Pa Pa Pa Pa Puffy (パパパパパフィー) was a variety/talk show previously hosted by Japanese pop duo Puffy AmiYumi which had aired on TV Asahi from 1st October 1997 to 31st March 2002.
The show aired weekly on Wednesdays from 11:09-11:54PM.
The show focused on wide arrays of activities hosted by Ami and Yumi, some of which included races to eat the most food and running obstacle courses to entering quizzes and performing simple game tasks.
A typical episode would feature the introduction of a celebrity or musical group (or groups of both, normally in special episodes). A song would then be played by them (while Ami and Yumi sing along; the song could either be a Puffy song or a song by the artist), and then a sort of game/s would take place after a talk with the member/s.
Notable celebrity guest appearances include Sylvester Stallone, Shonen Knife, Harrison Ford, Morning Musume, rock band Garbage, and many others.
The colourful cartoony set designs have been planned and drawn by American cartoonist/abstract artist Rodney Greenblat, who was well-known for illustrating many popular Puffy single covers in their '90s and early-2000's releases. Other animations and frames for video clips, as well as segments of the opening themes and caricatures of Ami and Yumi (in no way similar to their Hi Hi designs) included in the show were also designed by him.
No plans for releases of the show's episodes have been announced since its cancellation, although several clips have been found for download on various internet sites occasionally.
Puppets[]
The show is often accompanied by events described by certain cartoon puppets from the show, of which include:
- Muffy - a yellow female squirrel with her name a word play on 'Puffy', prominent in almost all episodes.
- Little Lemon - a puppet resembling a lemon creature who has a high-pitched voice.
- Very Shy Mouse - a grey-coloured female mouse, who supposedly does not talk much.
- Captain Catfish - a male catfish with a deep/gruff voice.
- Cosmo - a parrot, who does not appear as often compared to the other puppets.
During the progression of the show on the main set, the group of puppets can be seen observing the groups in separate holes on a boat painting in the background.
